To start, the fact that I am writing this post on Valentine's Day is inconsequential. But since all flavors of love are celebrated on this day, perhaps it's a little synchronous that after a week of having the idea in my head but no time to get it out, I would have a few hours today to finally sit down and write. This post is simply an account of my spiritual about-face regarding one concept. Your experience and/or belief may be in opposition and that's okay. The concept of twin flames is an old spiritual idea that has been around at least since the days of Plato. He spoke of twin flames in his Symposium. I won't cover it in depth here as there are literally thousands of resources online to do your own poking around, but in a nutshell, it describes the two halves of a human soul, each of which is incarnated (although perhaps at different times) into separate bodies. It is the deepest, soul-felt desire of each half to reunite with its other half. However, it is near-impossible to do so while incarnated (as the theory goes) because the spiritual vibration/frequency of both individuals, when united, cannot sustain itself in the face of human frailties and shortcomings, and within the density of this 3rd dimensional existence. According to the theory, both individuals must do immense amounts of inner spiritual development work to "raise their vibration" and transmute all the dross and impurities accumulated throughout lifetimes. Oftentimes just doing the work of transmuting one's own shit can take lifetimes... sigh. Only when each has reached a certain level of accomplishment is a meeting even possible. Add to this the probability that it is rare indeed that both halves are even incarnated at the same time, and reunion with one's twin flame may seem like a veritable pipe dream, something we can strive for lifetime after lifetime with no guarantee it will ever come our way. And I almost forgot: to attract one's twin, one must practice complete detachment to the desired outcome of reunion. I had an experience over a decade ago that led me to believe I had met my twin. It was fraught with genuine soul-crushing heartbreak for me and was a catalyst for a LOT of spiritual growth. (You can read a summary in this post.) Over time I learned more about the nature of consciousness, spirituality and the human soul. I read voraciously- online and offline- and expanded my understanding quite a bit if I do say so. I read Destiny of Souls and Journey of Souls by Dr. Michael Newton (among many others), both of which vastly increased the depth and breadth of my comprehension of the nature of souls and other spiritual dimensions. I learned about the Akashic Records and with that came even more clarity. It eventually dawned on me that (duh) of course we are complete and whole on our own and the idea that we need some other half of a soul out there somewhere to "complete" us before we can set off on our mission to serve humanity is rather absurd- and extremely disempowering! We can serve our fellow humans any damn time we choose. There is nothing lacking within ourselves and there never has been. We can find love and partnership any time we put our minds and hearts to it. The romantic aspect of the twin flame theory is a beautiful and inspiring one, but please don't let the false thinking that you are somehow incomplete within yourself hold you back from doing what your heart and soul desires, whatever that might look like. I still find a kind of transcendental sweetness in the idea of the twin flame, but it has been tempered with a sweeter knowledge of my own divine nature and wholeness. We are each a complete and unique expression of Divine Source, individuated and here because our souls chose to have human experiences. My 2 cents. What are yours? Shine on 💫❤️, Sara
