This blog post marks the first in a new monthly series touching on the properties of various crystals and stones. For those new to crystals and gemstones I hope this can serve as a jumping-off point for your explorations into the fascinating mineral kingdom. I'm starting with sugilite, also known as luvulite. Sugilite was discovered in 1944 by a Japanese petrologist named Ken Sugi. Most deposits of this stone come from South Africa where there are manganese mines and it has been found in Japan and Canada as well as a few other locations. It is considered to be rare. Sugilite has a hardness of 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. Sugilite is called purple turquoise by some uninformed individuals, however the two stones are very different in their mineral content.
It is known in metaphysical circles as the ultimate love stone and stone of the Violet Ray. It is a virtual powerhouse of healing and all forms of psychic and spiritual protection. Sugilite protects the soul from shock and trauma, is said to aid in understanding answers to the big questions in life, such as "why am I here?", "where did I come from?", "what else do I need to understand?". It can teach you how to live from your truth and reminds the soul of its reasons for incarnating at this time. Sugilite can assist in all sorts of dreamwork, from releasing nightmares to conscious dream journeying. It is excellent for empaths, offering energetic protection from outside sources. Try meditating with sugilite and see if it doesn't enhance your connection to the higher realms. It is ideal for those working on furthering their intuitive development, channeling, automatic writing and can stimulate kundalini rising. It offers very strong protection from negativity of all kinds, including entities with mal intent, as well as being a very grounding stone. Simply put, it is a stone bursting with gifts for those on a spiritual path. As another source has said, if you're not serious about spiritual development you might want to steer clear of this stone! Check out this older blog post about how my super special sugilite came to me. That's it in the photo above. 💖 Just fyi, some of the info in that post is repeated here. To this day I swear that stone was guided to me by another soul I'm aware of as a soul mate and teacher of sorts, known from many other lifetimes. That connection is the subject of the ethereal fairy tale in this post. Have fun on your stone adventures! Next month: turquoise. xxoo, Sara

Doing something new and out of your comfort zone always involves a degree of trepidation. For me that new thing was embracing my intuitive gift after years of being told by a number of people (all of them intuitives/readers) that I can do this. Friends have gifted me a few tarot and oracle decks over the years as well but I just didn't get the message until the most recent person told me and she's also my manifesting coach so, inexplicably, I finally listened this time. And to incorporate intuitive work into jewelry, it was kind of a no-brainer to offer designs based on information I retrieve on the client's behalf of what crystals/stones can benefit them. These pieces are created for one person only. This branch of work includes spirit animal work also. I will discover what spirit animal needs to communicate with my client. This may or may not be their prime animal totem. It may be an animal which carries an energy or quality they need to embody in their life. It may be a shadow animal, an animal which, in the physical, may elicit feelings of fear or disgust. However, this is just the creature to uncover and integrate shadow qualities. I can then create a talisman just for the client, using the correct metals for that person as I design their unique piece of jewelry. Since this is a new endeavor for me, I'm offering a discount for the month of October for this work as I hone my skills. I look forward to hearing from you and working with you, Sara What's your heritage? I mean, apart from being part of the human family, where does your human family come from? Mine is German, Swiss and French and I believe it's mostly German/Swiss. My recent ancestors are Pennsylvania Dutch from northern Ohio and my maternal grandfather didn't speak English until he went to school at age 5. My parents tell me that my two grandpas used to gently disagree with each other (both being pacifists!) on which Pennsylvania Dutch word was correct for whatever usage they were referring to. I also remember my maternal grandparents bickering with each other in Pennyslvania Dutch so we kids wouldn't understand what was being said! Family dynamics aside, I've long been intrigued by my ancestral spiritual heritage and the long-lost customs of the tribal Germanic people from which I come. The runic alphabet, it is generally agreed upon, derives from an old Italic alphabet used by the Mediterranean peoples, around the first century CE. However, if you could ask a Germanic tribesperson, she would undoubtedly tell you they were not "invented" but were discovered by Odin; given to him as he hung for nine days upon the World Tree, Yggdrasil. From the Havamal which is an Old Norse poem about the runes: I know that I hung On the wind-blasted tree All of nights nine, Pierced by my spear And given to Odin, Myself sacrificed to myself On that pole Of which none know Where its roots run. No aid I received, Not even a sip from the horn. Peering down, I took up the runes - Screaming I grasped them - Then I fell back from there. So, the runes were believed to be very potent, magically speaking, and were used not only for mundane writing, but magic and spellwork as well. They were vessels for archetypal energies which could be directed toward a desired outcome for the user. This little blog isn't sufficient to provide you with the wealth of rich human history contained within the history of the Germanic peoples. Below find some resources to whet your appetite... I'll simply share with you that I've created a set of the Elder Futhark runes in copper and sterling silver, to be worn as pendants. They can be strong little buggers, so do your homework before you choose one! Click the pic to go to the store. Resources: The best one I've found online is here. Everything to get you started on Norse mythology, cosmology, runic origins, gods and creatures, etc. Until next time, whatever your heritage, remember we're all part of the larger human family.
Peace, Sara I have been soooo remiss in blogging regularly. I apologize. But, I’ve been traveling and having adventures, and now I’d like to share some of it with you, dear reader. In June I took a humungous two-week road trip with my daughter and mother. We drove from North Carolina to Santa Fe, then to Denver, then to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
The original reason for my trip was to take a workshop at a place called Cuyamungue Institute near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Cuyamungue was founded by anthropologist Felicitas Goodman in 1978 to research altered states of consciousness and the spiritual practices of ancient humans. I participated in the introductory workshop in June- during the Summer Solstice- which taught us how to access Alternate Reality through ritual body postures. What are ritual body postures? They are found in totem poles, pottery, cave paintings and other forms of ancient art the world over. But they are more than simply art. They are “instructions” on how to access expanded consciousness. This practice is available to all humans and doesn’t require any preset religious beliefs or dogma. These postures date back 35,000 years to the horticultural period of human prehistory and were presumably used by shamans or medicine people for various purposes, from healing to discovering where were the best locations to plant that season. All of the trance sessions were held in the kiva at Cuyamungue, a magical place of ritual and ceremony. The connections shared with the other participants as we described our journeys made me feel truly part of something special and very unique. The workshop was facilitated by Cuyamungue Institute president Paul Robear and his wife Laura Lee. I felt genuinely supported as they led us through the portal to meet the spirits. Their shared wisdom proved invaluable and I emerged with new insights and information to use in my daily life. It was very much a singular, out-of-the-box experience for me and I feel the expansion throughout my being. Ritual postures literally open up a whole new world right before your inner eye. Following a quick visit to my brother and his family in Denver (to meet my new niece!) we headed to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, home to the Oglala Lakota (Sioux) people. Pine Ridge is one of the poorest reservations in the country, with 90% of the population living below the federal poverty level, high youth suicide rate (over 3 1/2 times higher than the national average) and low life expectancy (45-52, the shortest in the Western Hemisphere except for Haiti). But enough of the bad stuff. The purpose of my visit there was to finally meet the elder lady I’ve sponsored for two years. We speak on the phone once or twice a month, but I’ve always wanted to meet her in person. Finally I got my wish! We spent almost three hours with her, her daughter and great-granddaughter. They were kind enough to feed us lunch. Gifts were exchanged and we all enjoyed getting to know each other. The land on Pine Ridge possesses unparalleled beauty. I was lucky to be there in summer when all was green and very lush. During our three-day stay we also visited the Wounded Knee massacre site. Walking over that land and up to the mass grave on the hill was nearly overwhelming and brought some tears. But I wasn’t at all ready to come home. My heart was heavy as we left the rez and I know part of it remains there. I’ll go back someday. *Visit Cuyamungue Institute and expand your perception. *Interested in sponsoring a Lakota elder, family or child? Check out ONE Spirit. WARNING: Long-winded post commencing! Very woo-woo so if you don’t subscribe to that you’ll want to bail now. :) If you’re curious and you haven’t heard of twin flames, or have no idea what they are, it’s a good thing you chose to read this post. I’ll be giving a quick overview of this ancient spiritual concept and phenomenon, then provide some high-quality links so you can go and learn more. To give some perspective, Plato portrayed the legend of twin flames (or twin souls) 2500 years ago. Here it is in part: “And when one of them meets with his other half, the actual half of himself, the pair are lost in an amazement of love and friendship and intimacy and one will not be out of the other’s sight even for a moment. These are the people who pass their whole lives together; yet they could not explain what they desire of one another. For the intense yearning which each of them has towards the other does not appear to be the desire of lover’s intercourse, but of something else which the soul of either evidently desires and cannot tell, and of which she has only a dark and doubtful presentiment.” This phrase has, unfortunately in the last few years, become a sort of buzz word in the spiritual and New Age community, and has- in my opinion- lost some of its potency. I hope it doesn’t go the way of the word “soulmate”, a different spiritual connection with which it is too-often confused and interchanged. Both words describe a type of soul bond or connection that continues throughout the lifetimes of the souls involved. The connection of the soulmate type involves experiences we perceive as both negative and positive, but usually there is a deep feeling of love between the two. Soulmates appear in our lives as lovers, spouses, close friends, parents, children, close business associates, even people in the public eye who help us heal an aspect of ourselves in some way, and any other relationship you can think of which involves spiritual and emotional growth for both individuals. The twin flame relationship encompasses all these aspects of relationship, with the added intensity and challenge of massive opportunities for spiritual expansion. This type of union is also very rare. The twin flame will mirror all your shadows, insecurities and fears so you can acknowledge and overcome them. It has the potential to enable unprecedented growth during a lifetime. And- if you’re not prepared, it will be unbearably painful and difficult. As it happens, most of us cannot sustain this type of spiritual partnership for various reasons, and as a result a twin flame meeting (and parting... sigh!) will often serve as a wake-up call of sorts, to spur us on our individual paths of growth and service. However, if both people are “evolved” enough to remain in the twin flame relationship, it will unleash both partners’ unlimited potential for raising love and consciousness in the world and they will consequently be led to fulfill their complementary soul purposes for this lifetime together. This is truly a beautiful thing to behold for those of us lucky enough to come in contact with such a couple! And that, dear reader, is the twin flame union in a nutshell. Why would I write about such an arcane subject? Well, because I am a fan of all things arcane and little-understood, and I will share with you that I had an experience a number of years ago I truly feel qualifies as a twin flame meeting. It was a doozy -emotionally and spiritually- and it tore me up inside for YEARS. I questioned my sanity and did an unprecedented amount of soul-searching during that time. The person, of course, didn’t stay in my life, but he certainly woke me the hell up! As I was muddling through my “dark night of the soul” which sucked me into its black hole after he disappeared, I was sketching some designs one day and came up with a certain special doodle. I realized it sort of resembled a flame, and in a flash I had christened it my Twin Flame design. This year I decided to pull off the back burner to redesign, expand and share this graceful shape which has been so healing for me. There will be earrings, pendants and necklaces in both copper and silver, with turquoise, garnet and green aventurine. I’m playing with the idea of a ring design as well. If these designs speak to your heart I'd love to know in the comment section below! This new expanded collection will be released on January 31st.
